Q1. what prompted you to apply for the program?
I was introduced to the program by my advisor.
QDuring the period when the program was adopted, the University of Kitakyushu provided a "Nurturing Team" to the students adopted under the program, which included outside experts to provide support. Please tell us about any advice you received that left a lasting impression on you.
During the program, participants exchanged opinions with people who have actually established businesses in Kitakyushu and discussed business opportunities and the potential for new businesses. One of the things that particularly impressed me was the idea that business opportunities exist in what is new and what no one else is doing, and that if you don't try, you won't get anything. The outside experts were always interested in the latest developments and continued to challenge themselves while expanding their network of contacts. I had a personality of being afraid of failure and hesitant to take on challenges, but the experts told me, "If you don't try, you won't get anything.100Of the two challenges1Even if the success of the one-time100I remember being greatly impressed when I heard the idea that "if you can create more than twice the value, you have won enough.
QThe program is characterized by its connection with the local community. Please tell us about any episodes in your activities during the adoption period in which you were able to establish such connections.
Through the program, I had the opportunity to interact with people who have established and are active in local businesses, and I always met new people. When you are at a university or research institute, you may have connections with researchers, but you rarely have the opportunity to come in contact with the people who are actually running the businesses and economies of the region. However, through the program, I was able to get a real sense of how the city and society operate by talking directly with the people who are the source of the community's vitality. Furthermore, through our interactions, I felt that the people of the city expect universities and researchers to "bring new value to the community" and "return knowledge to society," and I also felt a sense of responsibility for my research.
Q4. program and JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships(DC2)What experiences, if any, have you gained through the program?
First, the experience of writing the application was very meaningful. I felt that it was necessary to devise expressions to be understood by the people reviewing the application, and to have writing skills with an awareness of logic and persuasiveness.
Throughout the program, I also had the opportunity to interact with people from other industries and to present my research in front of doctoral students from other fields. The experience of devising ways to communicate with people outside my field of expertise improved my presentation skills. As a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow, I had the opportunity to discuss with many researchers at academic conferences. Witnessing the research attitude and passion of researchers who are active on the front lines made me realize that I am still lacking in effort. On the other hand, I gained a great deal of inspiration and motivation, and became even more eager to engage in research.
Q5. You are currently a research employee of Shionogi & Co.
I was involved in research on polymeric materials when I was a student, which I believe is an unusual background for a pharmaceutical company. In recent years, polymeric materials have been attracting attention in the fields of drug discovery and drug delivery, and I would like to contribute to the company by providing new knowledge through my expertise. In the future, I foresee myself becoming a bridge between polymeric materials and pharmaceutical research, and working on the creation of formulation technologies. I also see this unusual background as an opportunity to work on something that no one else has tried, and I would like to proactively take on various challenges and aim to create new value while broadening the scope of my research.
